COURSE OVERVIEW

This intermediate course will instruct professionals in evaluation and treatment of children with complex feeding and swallowing disorders. Multidisciplinary evidence-based information pertaining to pediatric feeding disorders will be presented. Participants will be instructed in Pre-Chaining/Precautionary Care in development of foundational feeding skills for the first year of life. Pre-Chaining will address the medical fragile child as well as the non-oral feeder. Fraker, Walbert and Cox’s Food Chaining programs will introduce the participant to techniques of analysis of the core diet, flavor mapping, flavor masking, transitional flavors and use of rating scales to introduce foods in a systematic manner. Course will also address treatment of children with food allergies, feeding aversion and development of treatment programs for children with autistic spectrum disorder. DVD case studies will be utilized to enhance learning and facilitate audience interaction.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

By the conclusion of this course, the participant will be able to:


  • Recognize factors in the medical history that impact feeding and develop a greater understanding of nutritional status and readiness for intervention


  • Demonstrate knowledge of the complexity of pediatric feeding disorders and the need for multidisciplinary assessment and treatment programs


  • Develop complex, multidisciplinary treatment programs for children with diagnoses of autism, prematurity, feeding aversion, food allergies, behavioral and/or sensory-based feeding disorders


  • Demonstrate understanding of the techniques of Pre-Chaining and treatment of the medically fragile child


  • Demonstrate understanding of the techniques of Fraker, Walbert and Cox’s Food Chaining© Programs: analysis of the core diet, the techniques of flavor mapping and flavor masking, use of transitional flavors, and use of the rating scales for identifying food progression and monitoring progress.

8:00 – 8:15 Evidence based research- feeding therapy, review of research on food allergies, dysphagia, digestive tract disorders and feeding problems


8:15 – 9:00 You Can’t Treat It If You Can’t See It-Interpretation of key factors in the medical, developmental and feeding history for assessment and development of the feeding therapy program, Picky vs. Problem Eating


9:00 – 9:30 The Swallow Evaluation-Cervical auscultation of the swallow, evaluation of swallowing disorders in infants and children, functional oral motor and cranial nerve assessment, review of VOSS and FEES studies, Chiari Malformations


9:30 – 10:15 Developing Eyes That See- Videotaped cases, building foundation feeding skills, overview of oral motor strategies, use of nipples, bottles, cups, spoons as tools in treatment

10:30 – 12:00 Precautionary Care: Pre-Chaining Programs Review of Two Pre-Chaining Cases- techniques for evaluation and therapy, treatment with a diagnosis of aspiration, maintaining and/or developing pre-requisite feeding skills in the non-oral feeder, the critical periods of the first year of life

Continuing Education Units

This workshop offers 14 contact hours.
