COURSE OVERVIEW

This 2-day workshop is designed for professionals working as part of a multidisciplinary intervention team, providing services for infants and children with neuromotor involvement. Primary emphasis will be placed on the development of appropriate intervention programming for infants and children with neuromotor involvement who exhibit problems in oral motor, feeding, swallowing, and respiratory coordination function. The variety of factors that may be influencing a child’s feeding and swallowing function; the impact of body alignment and active postural control on oral motor and respiratory function; and the influences of rib cage and respiratory musculature activity on oral motor, upper extremity/fine motor, feeding/swallowing, and respiratory coordination function in infants and children will be emphasized especially in regard to their significance to intervention programming for this population. Strategies to improve oral motor, oral sensory, rib cage, and respiratory musculature activity will be discussed. Intervention strategies appropriate for direct treatment by different members of the intervention team as well as those appropriate for carryover activities such as mealtime feeding will be delineated.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to: Identify five primary areas that may influence a child’s feeding and swallowing function. Describe the essential components of comprehensive intervention programming for infants and children with neuromotor involvement who exhibit problems in oral motor, feeding/swallowing, and respiratory coordination function. Differentiate between goals appropriate for oral motor, feeding/swallowing, and respiratory coordination treatment and goals appropriate for carryover activities such as mealtime feeding. Identify strategies which may be implemented to assist in the improvement of oral motor, oral sensory, rib cage, and respiratory musculature activity in infants and children with neuromotor involvement.

PARTICIPANT REQUIREMENTS
Professionals who have a foundation of knowledge in the components of typical and atypical oral motor, feeding/swallowing, respiratory, upper extremity/fine motor, and general movement development. Participants should have practical experience as a member of a multidisciplinary team providing services for infants and children with neuromotor involvement who exhibit problems in oral motor, feeding/swallowing, and respiratory coordination function.

SPEAKER BIOS

Rona Alexander, Phd, CCC-SP

Instructor Rona Alexander, PhD, CCC-SLP is a speech-language pathologist specializing in the assessment and treatment of oral motor, feeding/swallowing, and respiratory-phonatory function in infants and children with neuromotor involvement. She maintains a private practice; provides consultation services; and conducts workshops on oral motor, feeding/swallowing, and respiratory coordination development, assessment, and treatment. As a qualified speech instructor in Neuro-Developmental Treatment, Dr. Alexander teaches in basic pediatric and advanced NDT courses. She has contributed chapters on oral motor, feeding/swallowing, and respiratory coordination function to numerous publications; is co-author of the book entitled, Normal Development of Functional Motor Skills: The First Year of Life; is author of the ASHA CEU product, Pediatric Feeding and Swallowing: Assessment and Treatment Programming; is author of the CEU product, Focus on the Rib Cage for Improvement of Respiration, Phonation, Movement, and Postural Control; and is co-developer of the CEU product, The ABCs of Pediatric Feeding and Swallowing.

Continuing Education Units

All participants will receive a certificate for a specific number of contact/clock hours upon completion of this workshop. This Workshop offers 11 1/4 contact hours [1.1 ASHA CEUs, Intermediate Level, Professional Area]. Each registrant should contact their respective organization for awarding of CEU credits.

We are a Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Accredited Provider with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR). Registered dietitians (RDs) and dietetic technicians, registered (DTRs) will receive 13 continuing professional education units for completion of this program/material.

The Arizona Speech Language Hearing Association is approved by the Continuing Education Board of the American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA) to provide Continuing Education Activities in Speech Language Pathology and Audiology.
